Real estate agents often need a clean place to think: compare two approaches to a seller update, organize questions for a team meeting, or test whether an AI assistant can turn rough notes into a useful checklist. ChatGPT Temporary Chat can help with that kind of short-lived work. The important word is temporary, not confidential.

On August 27, OpenAI announced new controls for Temporary Chat. A user can now choose at the start of a temporary conversation whether responses should be personalized with existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins. A useful temporary conversation can also be saved later. OpenAI says the new controls are rolling out, so an individual account may not show them immediately.

The update makes Temporary Chat more flexible, but it also makes the decision at the beginning more important. A non-personalized session begins without memory, custom instructions, or plugins. A personalized session can draw on all three. Neither version creates new memories while it remains temporary, and neither appears in chat history unless the user saves it.

What Temporary Chat does—and does not do

By default, a new Temporary Chat is non-personalized. That can be useful when an agent wants to see how the assistant responds without background from earlier conversations or standing instructions. It creates a cleaner test, especially when the question is whether the request itself provides enough context.

OpenAI’s current FAQ says an unsaved Temporary Chat is not used to improve its models, but the company may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes. It also says limited information from prior conversations may still be used in rare, high-risk situations for safety and security. Temporary therefore describes history, memory, and model-improvement behavior; it does not mean the conversation disappears instantly or bypasses safety systems.

Account and workspace restrictions still apply. If a brokerage or team has rules about approved AI tools, client information, record handling, plugins, or retention, opening a Temporary Chat does not cancel those rules. Treat the feature as one setting inside the approved environment, not as a separate private workspace.

Choose personalization for the job

A personalized Temporary Chat may be useful for a low-risk task that genuinely benefits from the agent’s existing preferences. For example, an agent could use fictional details to test whether established custom instructions produce a meeting-preparation outline in the right tone and format. The assistant can use existing memory and instructions without adding new memories from that temporary session.

A non-personalized Temporary Chat is better when the agent wants a clean-room test. It can reveal whether a request stands on its own or whether the output only works because ChatGPT already knows the user’s preferences. That makes it useful for testing instructions before sharing them with a team.

The personalization choice cannot be changed after the conversation begins. If the wrong mode was selected, start over rather than assuming the setting changed. For either mode, begin with fictional, public, or properly approved information. Do not paste a client email, inspection report, financial detail, identification document, access code, or transaction record merely because the chat is temporary.

Saving changes the boundary

A temporary conversation may become valuable: perhaps it produced a strong set of interview questions or a clear content outline. Saving it converts the conversation into a regular chat. It then appears in history and follows the account’s personalization and model-improvement settings. If memory is enabled, OpenAI says the saved chat may be referenced to personalize later responses.

That is a meaningful change, not a filing detail. Before saving, reread the full conversation and remove the assumption that it will remain outside history. Ask whether every detail belongs in a regular chat under the account’s current controls. If the durable value is only the outline, move an approved version into the team’s normal system instead of saving unnecessary working material.

Plugins widen the data path

Personalized Temporary Chats can use plugins. If a GPT or plugin sends data to a third party, OpenAI says that data is governed by the recipient’s privacy policy and may be retained longer than 30 days. The Temporary Chat label does not travel with the data and impose the same limits everywhere.

For a first test, keep plugins off and use fictional information. If a plugin is later necessary, confirm what it receives, what it can do, how the provider handles data, and whether the connection is approved. A narrower workflow is easier to understand and review.

A practical action checklist

  • Confirm the new controls have reached your account before relying on them.
  • Choose personalized or non-personalized before the conversation starts.
  • Use fictional, public, redacted, or explicitly approved information.
  • Keep plugins off unless the task truly requires one and its data path is approved.
  • Review the entire conversation before saving it as a regular chat.
  • Keep facts, client communication, advice, and consequential decisions under human review.
  • Follow brokerage policy and account or workspace restrictions every time.

Use the feature as a boundary, not a promise

Temporary Chat is useful when an agent wants a fresh session, limited personalization, or a low-risk place to test an idea. It is not a substitute for judgment about what information belongs in an AI system. The safest first use is small and reversible: fictional data, one preparation task, no plugins, and an output the agent can inspect in a minute or two.
